Becoming: Disturbance

This piece, Becoming: Disturbance, is part of a small group of works under the title Becoming, which itself sits within my ongoing series In the Name of Body.

I made it in 2025 while thinking back on a period when I felt deeply unsettled—those moments when you can feel that something is changing inside you, but it’s not comfortable. You know it’s necessary, maybe even good, but it still feels heavy and uncertain. That feeling of disturbance, of being on the edge of change, is what I wanted to express here.

The texture and colours came out of that emotion. I used plaster bandages and worked in layers—sometimes peeling things back, sometimes adding roughness—almost like how those moments feel inside. I set out to focus on materials, from the start, as the materiality would help carry the weight of the feeling, which it did become part of how the story was told.
