Becoming: Formation

Becoming: Formation is the second piece in the Becoming mini-series, part of the larger In the Name of Body series. I created it after Disturbance in order to continue exploring how transformation feels, especially in those moments when something begins to take shape, yet carries uncertainty. There is tension between forming and dissolving, between what is emerging and what’s being left behind.

Materiality played an important role in shaping this feeling. I used plaster bandage beneath the paint again, letting it create surface textures that almost feel like they’re pressing forward or pulling back. The textures helped me reflect that unsettled state, when something is becoming but hasn’t quite arrived. The figure emerged slowly through this process and now feels central. Surface, colour, and form all work together to express that suspended moment of becoming.
